BigCommerce vs Wix: Why businesses are making the switch

BigCommerce makes it easy to get your online store up and running quickly — with all the built-in features you need to save time and money.

Get access to more built-in features and functionality

Wix operates as a website builder first and an ecommerce solution second, leaving merchants with restrictions on storage, API call limits, very few ecommerce apps and workarounds for selling wholesale. On the other hand, BigCommerce offers robust native features for selling B2C and B2B so that you can launch your online store quickly — and scale operations as you grow.

Easily adapt to ever-changing shopper expectations

Wix makes it difficult to adapt as your business needs evolve — like rebuilding from scratch just to change your theme or the limits on available payment providers. BigCommerce gives you the flexibility you need to innovate. Easily swap between fully responsive themes whenever you want. Add digital wallets to your site. And so much more.

Reach more customers by expanding sales channels

BigCommere makes it easy to sell on the world’s top social platforms and marketplaces, such as Amazon, Walmart, TikTok, Wish, Facebook, Instagram — and more. Plus, you get a free Google Ads & Shopping app. Wix only has a few native integrations, and even if you pay for apps, like MultiOrders, you still don’t get access to as many channels as BigCommerce.

Optimize and automate your wholesale capabilities

Wix doesn’t support selling products in bulk/wholesale. Instead, they suggest creating restricted pages. BigCommerce supports wholesale ecommerce with native functionality like price lists and restricted login. And with B2B Edition, you can access next-level features, including setting buyer roles and permissions, quick reorder, quote management and more.

Common BigCommerce vs Wix questions

What additional channels can you sell on with BigCommerce and Wix?

With BigCommerce, merchants can connect to Walmart, Facebook, Amazon, eBay, Wish, Mercado Libre, Instagram, TikTok and Google Ads. Additionally, with apps like Feedonomics, even more listings are available.

Wix’s channel integrations only support eBay, Instagram, Facebook Shop, and Amazon. Wix does have third-party apps like MultiOrders that can help connect merchants to more channels; however, there’s an additional monthly fee and, unlike BigCommerce, still doesn’t allow merchants to connect to channels such as TikTok, Wish, Mercado Libre and Walmart.

What happens if I want to change my theme?

Once you choose a theme in Wix, you cannot switch to a new one without doing a full site rebuild, which can take countless hours depending on how long you’ve been using the current theme. Additionally, any customizations will need to be redone on the new theme as well.

On BigCommerce, you can swap themes whenever you want directly in the control panel without disrupting analytics, products, SKUs, images or category structure.

Do Wix and BigCommerce support alternative payment methods, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Amazon Pay?

Wix does not support Google Pay or Amazon Pay. Wix can now support Apple Pay, but only with Wix Payments, their proprietary payment processor.  BigCommerce supports a wide variety of digital wallets, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Amazon Pay. You can also add buy now pay later (BNPL) options, such as Klarna, After Pay, Sezzle, Affirm and more.

How can merchants sell through Google Ads and Shopping?

Wix merchants don’t have access to Google Ads or Shopping out of the box. In order to use Google Ads or sell on Google Shopping, they would need to use a paid third-party extension like AdScale; whereas, BigCommerce includes afree Google Ad & Shopping app in the control panel.

Can a merchant customize the checkout on Wix and BigCommerce?

Merchants cannot customize the Wix checkout page. On the other hand, BigCommerce merchants can use our APIs and SDKsto customize their checkout.

Is multi-currency available for Wix and BigCommerce?

Wix advertises multi-currency, but their multi-currency is only for currency displays, not transactions. (i.e. if you’re a US-based merchant, a customer in France can see products displayed in their local currency but at checkout will only be able to transact in USD).

On BigCommerce, if you are using a payment gateway that supports multi-currency, a Stencil theme and one-click checkout, you can set up both display and transactional currencies.

What Point-of-Sale (POS) options are available?

Wix does offer a point of sale system for merchants, but they need to be using Wix payments, which is only available to merchants in North America and Europe.

BigCommerce supports many of the most popular POS platforms in the industry and never charges any additional transaction fees:

  • Square
  • ShopKeep
  • Clover
  • Heartland Retail
  • Hike
  • Lightspeed Retail
  • Revel Systems
  • AmberPOS
  • Vend
